Министр здравоохранения Фиджи Нейл Шарма (Neil Sharma)

The Ministry of Health has made a startling revelation at the Fiji Food Summit today – saying that 60 percent of Fiji's population are overweight. The Minister for Health Doctor Neil Sharma also revealed Fiji is the fourth ranked obese nation in the Pacific.

“NCD arise as a lifestyle imbalance of what we consume and that which we expend. Nutritional imbalances resulting from not eating local produce to canned, processed food contribute to the equation especially in these times of global economic crisis.” He says that only 16 percent of the population live beyond 50 years as non communicable diseases and cancers take their toll on our health.

At the other end of the spectrum, a significant number of people are deficient in iron and micro nutrients. On this the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, when he opened the Summit this morning says luxury living is the cause of all this and this is costing the country a lot of money. “This must change. Food is not only the responsibility of the Ministry of Health alone. We must all contribute. Imagine the economic costs this puts on our health care system.”

The World Health Organisation director Doctor Ken Chen says Pacific islanders have changed their diets in the last 100 years where flour has replaced root crops as main staple food. “Dietary changes through increased food imports in the Pacific was noted as early as 1975 with the rise of nutrition problems not apparent before globalization.” The Food Summit is a Ministry of Health initiative aimed at formulating ways to encourage healthy living in Fiji.

He lost that position during a Cabinet reshuffle on January 4, 2008.

Senilagakali was educated at Lau Provincial School and subsequently at Queen Victoria School on the main island of Viti Levu, where he studied from 1945 to 1950, when he enrolled in the Fiji School of Medicine. In 1964, he took time out to study orthopedic surgery in Melbourne, Australia, and at the Vellore Christian Medical College Hospital in India.[3]

On his return to Fiji in 1968, he was employed as a consultant surgeon at Labasa hospital, before becoming a lecturer at his alma mater in 1970, a position he held for three years. He was President of the Fiji Medical Association from 1970 to 1974 and from 2005 to the present. He was also the "public member" of the disciplinary committee of the Fiji Law Society from 1998 to 2006.[4]

Senilagakali is considered by some to be the best known and respected medical practitioner in the nation, having previously been the president of the Fiji Medical Association, before becoming the medical doctor to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

From 1981 to 1983, Senilagakali served as a counsellor for the Fijian Embassy to Tokyo before becoming Consul General to Los Angeles, a position he held until 1985.[5] After a brief stint as a roving ambassador to Pacific Islands Forum countries, he became Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office in 1986.
