Министр здравоохранения Бутана Зангли Дукпа

Bhutan's first democratically elected Health Minister Lyonpo Zangley Dukpa; the Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) candidate from Khar-Yurung constituency, Pemagatshel symbolizes the fruits of commitment, competence and confidence. That he is 'The Son' of the constituency was demonstrated in his victory in the parliamentary elections with the highest percentage of votes.

Born in Dungmin, a village eight hours away from the nearest road point, his long and rewarding journey of life began with his enrollment at the Yurung Junior Secondary School, Pemagatshel in 1959. Destiny then took him to the Teacher's Training Institute, Samtse.

In 1970, he reaped the first fruits of his labour as he became a teacher after completion of the training. However, this was just the beginning. Fate had other designs. As a teacher, Zangley Dukpa showcased and demonstrated his qualities and capacities, innate and acquired, leading to his recognition as a prospective and promising architect in nation building. However, he had to be well equipped, which took him to Singapore, Edinburgh and Bristol in the United Kingdom.

His aptitudes, leadership qualities and strength of character were unveiled during this phase in his nomination as the student councilor in Singapore and the foreign student's representative in Edinburgh. He graduated with diploma in Education from the College of Education, University of Edinburgh and obtained the degree of Masters in Education in 1983 from Bristol University, UK.

Exposed to the modern world and intellectually well equipped, he was assigned the task of molding Bhutan's education system as the Education Department's Deputy Director. He did not stay there for long as Bhutan's 'Peak of Learning', Sherubtse beckoned him. As the first national Principal of the college, the mammoth tasks of grooming, guiding, monitoring, leading and mentoring Bhutan's future- young hot-blooded Sherubtseans- fell on him, which he accomplished with unwavering dedication.

Principal Zangley Dukpa tasted the ultimate moment of glory in 1994, as His Majesty the fourth Druk Gyalpo conferred him the Red Scarf (Dasho) in recognition of his services to the Nation. He then served as the Dzongda of Chhukha and in 2003 became the Vice Chancellor of the Royal University of Bhutan, from where he resigned to participate in the first general elections.

A member of numerous institutions and organizations both inside and outside the country, his contributions include his involvement in drafting the National Education Policy, DYT & GYT chathrims and acts and others. He has participated in numerous conferences and seminars outside the country. He is also a recipient of a double grade promotion from the fourth King.

A repository of invaluable experience and knowledge as an educationist and an administrator; the father of five children, fifty seven years old Lyonpo Zangley Dukpa holds the reins of the MoH and is responsible for improving the health of the people, a quintessence for reaching the island of Gross National Happiness-the nation's collective goal.
